Welcome to Sandlotz—the home of UN-organized sports for your kids! P.E. Was NEVER Like This!
Greetings all--my name is Shaun Kennard (father of three of my own—college freshman, high school freshman, 6th grader) and I’ve coached organized youth sports for over 30 years. I spent 25 years coaching high school water polo and swim, moved on to age group softball for five years, and have now spent several years coaching multiple teams/seasons of flag football. I love it all!! And yet I have always felt that there was something missing from what’s offered to our kids. Now don’t get me wrong—clearly, I’m a huge proponent of organized sports and the lessons they offer our children—but sometimes it gets to be too much. Back when I was a kid (and dinosaurs roamed the earth), all the kids in the neighborhood knew to just meet after school at the park or, yes, that empty lot, to play the game of the day. And as long as you were home for dinner, all was well. But times have changed. No longer do those who attend the same schools seem to live in all the same neighborhoods and those empty lots seem harder to find. So what’s a kid to do that just wants to spend some time playing (and burning off some of that extra energy) without the stress and anxiety of parents and coaches watching everything they do?
Enter “Sandlotz”.
One day a week, for roughly 60 minutes, we will play--kickball, dodgeball, steal the bacon, go for the gold, flag football, ultimate frisbee, tag, and a whole host of other, active games. To start each “Sandlotz Session” we would spend just a little time learning a skill. How to throw a ball, kick a ball, dodge a ball, catch and throw a frisbee, run faster, etc… There would also be a short time spent doing some simple calisthenics—you know, burpees, pushups, shuttle runs, jumping jacks, etc… Nothing intense but just enough to get them warmed up (besides—I think every kid should know how to do a good pushup or jumping jack). From then on—it’s play time!! And yes, we WILL keep score. Every day there will be a winning team and a losing team. Kids will learn how to win with humility and lose with grace and that neither one is really that big of a deal. We will focus on sportsmanship, teamwork, strategies, playing hard and having fun!
