Elementary Class Descriptions/ Book List
PRESCHOOL |
Each week of preschool we will have a letter focus. We will learn about an animal to correspond with our letter of the day. We will also learn some ASL throughout the year. We will learn the ASL letter sign for the day in addition to one simple ASL sign each day. We will have a half an hour or gym each day and work on fine motor skills with crafts and activities to reinforce our letter theme. We will practice tracing our names and work towards writing our names independently. We will practice social skills through free play and teacher directed activities. |

In this class we will be working on developing large motor skills through fun group games, sports exercises, jumping rope, and other activities. This will be done in an encouraging environment fostering an appreciation and interest in physical accomplishment. |

Kindergarten - SOCIAL STUDIES |
This year in Kindergarten we will be using a social studies course through Masterbooks for the framework of education. The major concept is our time and place in history with a core foundation of family, neighborhood, and church community. Covered topics include introductions to family and culture, what it means to be a good citizen, basic geography, understanding simple map terms, basic economics, the value of things, and our time and place in history. We will also be talking about days of the weeks, months of the year, historical holidays and early American history. Through this year of study children will learn how to interact with and contribute to the world in which they live |

Kindergarten / Pre K - SCIENCE / ALPHABET TIME |
This class will cover a variety of topics related to science such as the senses, weather, plants, animals, and more. Experiments, worksheets, and other hands-on activities will enhance learning. We will also be covering the Alphabet during this time as well. No textbook needed. A class fee for copies and supplies will be collected at the end of the year. |

1st & 2nd Grade - HISTORY |
Native Americans History Pockets: This year’s hands-on, craft-based course will focus on eight Native American tribes’ food, clothing, shelter, and family life. Students will also study the life of David Brainerd, an early American missionary to the Native Americans. In addition to history, each class will begin with “calendar time”, where students will concentrate on reviewing the current date, and learning the days of the week and months of the year. Special emphasis will also be given to important holidays, such as Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, President’s Day, etc. The rest of the class time will be devoted to hands-on-activities and projects. No textbook is required. A class fee will be charged at the end of the year to cover the cost of copies and supplies. Some optional projects may be assigned outside of class. |

1st & 2nd Grade - SCIENCE |
This hands-on learning class will cover a variety of topics related to physical science. Young learners will discover what energy and matter are, how simple machines work, what the planets are like, why the earth has seasons, how the water cycle works, and how mountains are formed. Throughout these studies, the Bible will be brought to life while learning how God is the author of all science! The textbook will contain activity pages which students will use to create their own science notebooks. There will be a small fee charged at the end of the year to cover the cost of supplies and copies. |

3rd - 6th Grade - GYM |
This class will cover a variety of sports/activities including, but not limited to, soccer, basketball, hockey, dodgeball, yard games and other various recess games. There will be a mileage club for students to participate in which will promote and encourage walking and running as ways to stay active every day. This club will offer incentives. There will be a big focus on the virtues in the Bible and how they can be applied to good sportsmanship on and off the field. There will be short quizzes and/or worksheets which students will complete during class time and will be useful to include in the student’s portfolio. A fee may be charged at the end of the year to cover the cost of copies |

3rd Grade - U.S. HISTORY |
In this class, students will learn about the “Dawn of Opportunity”, examining the events from the 1700’s to the 1900’s. Geography begins the year, then we will learn about the masses of people immigrating to America; how that changes the look of America and what freedom means. We will study missionaries, the fifty states of America, the explosion of inventions and how that also changed the way America looked and operated. We will touch on some world history and end with government and economics. This class will include sequencing events, summarizing data, making predictions, working with graphs, and forming opinions. Students will have weekly homework assignments and do projects and other hands-on activities. A copy fee will be collected at the end of the year. |

Using Apologia’s Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day, students will learn the process of animal classification, dynamics of flights, the study of birds, and unpack the world of bats. We will wrap up this year learning about prehistoric flying creatures, insects and their life cycles. Class time will be spent doing activities, projects and lapbooks. There will be weekly homework assignments. A copy and supply fee will be collected for this class. |

Using Apologia's Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day, students will learn about God’s incredible world of aquatic animals and their ocean habitat. Various ocean animals will be studied, including whales, seals, sea turtles, fish, sharks, crabs, octopuses, sea stars, jellyfish, and many more. There will be weekly homework assignments, as well as intermittent projects. Class time will include group activities and experiments. A small copy/supply fee may be collected for this class. |

In this class, students will study the following topics: Earthquakes & Volcanoes, Weathering & Erosion, Natural Resources, Cells & Classification, Plant & Animal Classification, Plant & Animal Reproduction, Heredity and Genetics, Nervous System, and Immune System. Along with regular weekly reading and workbook assignments, monthly projects will be completed and presented to the class. Classes will consist of lesson review, games, experiments, group activities, etc. Quizzes and a test will be given in the second semester to encourage study skills and material retention. Age 4 - 1st Grade - Music & Movement Class (Fall and Spring Elective) |
The class will offer a basic first taste in enjoying and participating in music within a group. Forming a foundation with simple musical games, music will first of all be fun. Introduction to a variety of classical pieces of music will foster appreciation for its diverse and imaginative qualities. Singing engaging songs with a group will offer first experiences in melody, echo/responsive turn taking, and lyrical memorization. Hand motions and choreographed movements will offer further engagement in the music experience. Most importantly, children will learn through songs and motion that their heart, their voice, and their praise are valuable instruments of worship to God. |

2nd - 6th Grade - STEM / LEGO Club (Fall Elective) |
Students will be led in various group challenges against one another to provide some competitive fun. The younger kids will be doing more with the legos as the older group will focus more on the STEM portion. Some of the challenges will involve building with legos, making aluminum boats, creating the fastest paper airplanes, and various similar activities. Legos will be supplied (Group A: 2nd-3rd & Group B: 4th-6th)

This class will be all about getting creative and thinking outside the box. You will explore learning different techniques with painting, drawing, sculpting and lots more. The class will be designed and tailored for each appropriate age group .

2nd - 6th Grade - Cooking/Baking (Spring Elective) |
During the spring we will provide an opportunity for kids to expand their skills in the culinary world !This class will spend time on understanding meal preparations, everything from preparing a grocery list, understanding a recipe and then walking through the steps to produce a main or side dish as well as desserts. While some of this will be done in class, homework will be assigned some weeks to finish the dish at home, and then served to family or friends . A final project for the end of the semester will be to complete a dessert that will then be served for presentation night. The class will be designed and tailored for each appropriate age group .

7th & 8th Grade - Life Science Member Cost - $0 |
The aim of this class is to give you a better appreciation and understanding for life as God created it and to help you better develop your inquiry skills by using the scientific method. (And hopefully, have fun, while doing so! ) There will be a fee for this class collected at the end of the year to cover the cost of copies, dissection specimens, and lab supplies. (Cost will be kept at $20/student or less.) Tests will be provided to take at home. This course will cover the following subjects: cell structures and activities, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, genetics, heredity, viruses, bacteria and other single-celled organisms, fungi, plants, animals, and creation versus evolution. The first half of class will include a lecture, followed by experiments and activities. There will be approximately 30-40 minutes of homework/day. This course includes a lab component. You will become proficient in using a microscope and making both a wet and dry mount slide. You will dissect your own owl pellet and earthworm. Several other specimens will be dissected together in a group setting. An optional unit on the human body systems may also be completed on your own at home, to round out your study of life science. |

The middle school students will learn the fundamentals of the writing process and literary analysis. They will learn nine structural writing models (i.e. note taking, simple reports, writing from pictures, research reports, creative writing, essays, etc.) to help them organize any type of composition. Additionally, stylistic techniques (strong verbs, quality adjectives, sentence openers, and more) will be taught incrementally to gently move students from the basics into more sophisticated writing. There will also be at least three book studies throughout the year. Assignments will be graded. Lessons will be taught from the Grammar & Composition I book by Abeka. The book does NOT need to be purchased. There will be a copy fee of $10-$15 for the year. |

The purpose of this class is to promote teamwork, encouragement, self-control, fun, and physical activity. The year will be broken up into units of activities. The units will consist of a two to three week period. Activities will include and will not be limited to: Volleyball, Cornhole, Square dancing, Basketball, Pickleball, Ultimate Frisbee, Spikeball, and Can Jam. There will be an optional outside activity of Frisbee golf, Bowling or Miniature golf. |

Students will often interact with other worldviews many times a day. This course cuts through all the noise to present students with the truth of a biblical worldview, helping them distinguish it from the false worldviews of the day. Using the teaching of the Scriptures, it challenges students to examine how they think about the world and then leads them to see the world as it truly is. This course will be led by Pastor Ryan Clift. Since this class is a wide range of ages/grades, Pastor Ryan is using a Grade 6 level curriculum but will build on it to the level the students need. |

The main components of this class include reading four books and completing a major research project. As we read each of the four books, we will have class discussions about what we read and have comprehension checks. Each book will also have a short project paired with it. We will learn how to research, take notes, compile information, and write a five to seven page research paper. Along the way, we'll study sentence structure, vocabulary, and other language mechanics. We will write using varied styles such as persuasive, creative, and expository. |

Physical science is the systematic study of God's creation and how it works. This course will be broken down into two components: we will study basic chemistry in the fall, including an introduction to matter, the periodic table, atoms, chemical reactions, acids, and bases, etc.; in the spring, our studies will include an introduction to physics in which we'll explore motion and force, waves (sound, light, electromagnetic), electricity, magnetism, among other topics. There will be weekly homework assignments (approximately 30-45 minutes per weekday) with some periodic projects. We will have classroom and at-home labs as well. All aspects of high school chemistry are covered including: atomic structure, nomenclature, reactions, aqueous solutions, chemical composition, atomic theory, stoichiometry, chemical bonding, mass calculations, gasses, solutions, orbitals, polar and ionic bonding, Lewis structure, acids and bases, equilibrium, electrochemistry, oxidation and reduction reactions, radioactivity, and intro to organic and biochemistry. There is also a fifth and sixth edition. The text is almost identical for all the editions, but the problems are different, and it is important that all the students will be doing the same problems. |
