What is a microschool?
Microschools can have many different sizes, age groups, etc. At Discovery Academy, our microschool is a small learning environment with 10-12 children on multiple grade levels working with one instructor.

What is the learning environment like at Discovery Academy?
Discovery Academy uses project-based learning experiences and thematic units to build learning environments that provide individualized learning opportunities. Instruction follows the student’s own pace, style, and abilities as we are focused on developmentally appropriate learning rather than age-based grade levels. With a maximum of 12 students, the small enrollment number helps promote effective small group instruction and one-on-one assistance as needed. Each student is allowed time and space to work on projects that will help them reach their individual potential and achieve academic success. The learning environment itself provides students with a safe and supportive space for students to explore inquiry-based units that fosters creativity, problem-solving, and higher-level thinking. Worktables, inviting reading areas, open-ended research/exploration spaces, and guided small group learning stations contribute to the overall environment. Technology is used as a learning tool to assist students as they learn to research, develop mindfulness, and create digital projects. Family members are encouraged to use their own personal expertise to participate in the learning process in the school setting and at home.

Do you work with special needs students?
We meet with each family individually to determine if our setting is a good fit. All primary school students including ones with developmental delays are encouraged to apply.

What Schedule and Calendar do you follow?
Generally, we follow the HCS calendar but may make some exceptions that will be noted in advance. On a regular school day, classes run from 8-2:30.

Is Discovery Academy a homeschool or private school?
Discovery Academy operates as an LLC- Private School. 

Are outside therapists allowed to come to the school?
ABA therapists or other therapists who work with our students are invited to schedule time during the day to make therapy visits.
