We return with more drawing lessons from our local artist, Cindy Conley! For those who don’t know, Cindy has won numerous awards for her drawings including first place at the 2-day Christian Concert & Art Festival called “Purple Door” that used to be held at Ski Roundtop, where she was competing against other artists, in multiple medias, from all over North America and Canada. She teaches art classes for the Carlisle Parks & Rec and for the Adams County Christian Academy.
In this lesson, Cindy will guide your child in learning how to draw a farm landscape with a couple of distant outbuildings, round hay bales in a field and mountain ridges in the background. The focus will be on perspective.
Note: although your child may use a #2 pencil and regular copy paper, the quality of his/her drawing will not be as good as if they used a charcoal or graphite pencil and sketch paper (which is rougher than copy paper which makes blending and shading easier). The choice is ultimate up to you, though, and depends on what you want your child to get out of the class. If you want him/her to gain a basic understanding of the drawing method, a #2 pencil and copy paper is find. If, however, you want them to produce the best quality effect with their drawing, it would be helpful to invest in a charcoal or graphite pencil and sketch paper. And just a clarification for those non-artistic parents out there - like me - the charcoal and graphite pencils are very similar, however, the charcoal is a much easier tool to use for blending and shading and it gives much more texture availability.
