Where does your water come from? Well, that depends, doesn’t it? Where you live makes a big difference in your water source. If you live in the country, it will come from a well. But if you live in town or in the city…well, then that’s a different story, isn’t it? Sometimes water can come from a lake. So what process is used to make city water suitable for drinking (potable)? And what can you do to protect your environment and keep your water clean?

Come find the answers to those questions and more. The York Water Company supplies nearly 20 million gallons of water every day and has more than 66,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Over 194,000 people use their water in 48 communities in York and Adams County.

We will have a guided walk through the entire plant, learning the answers to the questions above as well as learning the “business of water” which includes professions such as: engineers, biologists, chemists, accountants and business administration. It would be advantageous for students to have a general understanding of the water cycle before coming.

York Water Co is an active industrial facility. The tour will include walking up and down stairs & hills, over unpaved surfaces (gravel and grass), as well as walking over open grates and rapidly flowing water, near working, functional machinery, and near hazardous chemicals. Sturdy, closed-toed shoes are required. Most of the tour will be outside, so please dress appropriately. All students must be supervised by a responsible adult. Attendees should be aware of the exposure risks and will be asked not to touch anything (and no swimming!)

NOTE: All ages are welcome although the tour will be geared to students 2nd grade and up. Students younger than 2nd grade must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

York Water Co is located next to Reservoir Park where you are welcome to bring a blanket & your bagged lunch. Eat, walk the paved trail, & enjoy the afternoon.
