Bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it!
We will be split into 2 groups and rotate between the two programs: Women’s Roles in Early America and 18th Century Medicine & Surgery. They we will all join together for the 3rd program: Civilian to Soldier.
Program Outline:
? 10:00-10:15 - Arrival and Introduction
? 10:15-10:45 - Rotation 1 (Women’s Roles and Medicine and Surgery)
? 10:45-11:15 - Rotation 2 (Women’s Roles and Medicine and Surgery; Rotate to other station)
? 11:15-12:00 - Rotation 3 (Full group Civilian to Soldier)
Program Objectives:
Women’s Roles in Early America
Objectives: The visitor will come away with a better understanding of what women did during the colonial period including;
1. Life at home including chores and expectations.
2. Uses of the garden as a medicinal and food source
3. What women did outside of the house, and what could be done for independence.
18th Century Medicine and Surgery Program
Objectives: The visitor will come away with a better understanding of medical science during the Colonial Period including;
1. They will learn who practiced healthcare in the 18th Century and the differences between them (Physicians, Surgeons, Nurses, Quacks).
2. The visitor will learn about the basic concepts of Physic (medicine) where it can come from, how it was used, and how it compares to today
3. The visitor will be introduced to Surgery and its principals, with a focus on a few specific procedures
Civilian to Soldier
Objectives: The visitor will come away with a better understanding of soldiers in the 18th century including:
1. They will learn the difference between a career soldier and a militia member
2. They will learn about the basic roles and duties of soldiers in the 18th century 3. 3. The visitor will participate in demonstrations of 18th century drill and maneuvers
There are picnic tables onsite if you would like to pack a picnic lunch. The Institute sits on 30 acres that you are free to explore. They have multiple walking trails and plenty of space to run around and play. They also have self guided activities such as site and nature scavenger hunts that they will have printed off for us. You will just need to bring your own pencils and/or crayons.
Note: Parents are welcome to participate in the program but they must pay the participation fee. Otherwise, non-participating parents are welcome to watch for free. This does not include the scavenger hunts and self-guided activities.
