Join us as we visit the newest museum in town. Beyond the Battle tells the remarkable story of ordinary eyewitnesses and their extraordinary experiences before, during, and after the Civil War. Through twelve interactive exhibit galleries packed with rare artifacts, the museum explores the story of Gettysburg like you've never seen or heard it before. It begins with Natural History (1 or 2 mentions of evolution are noted in this section of the museum) – let your child touch a fossil dinosaur footprint - then move on thru the Native Americans, Life on the frontier, the Revolutionary War, a Growing Community, The Civil War (including the optional Caught in the Crossfire experience), the Aftermath, the Address, Preservation & Progress, and The Recent Past.
Caught in the Crossfire, the museum’s premier exhibit, is an immersive experience that uses cutting-edge technology to place visitors inside a meticulously reconstructed farmhouse during the Battle of Gettysburg. Visitors will see, hear, and feel what it was like for one Gettysburg family to be overrun by invading forces and trapped behind enemy lines. This exhibit begins every 5 minutes and parents are welcome to walk thru first to decide if they want their child(ren) to experience this.
There are 3 levels of scavenger hunts available at the front desk and they will give us a presentation on Children of the Battlefield (all ages are welcome to attend just know that the presentation is geared towards 7th grade and up). And, as the icing on the cake, it will be decorated for Christmas!
