What is the Iowa Basic Skills Test?
The Iowa Basic Skills Test is a tool used for annual student assessment. It is similar to the California Achievement Test.
Why take the Iowa Basics Skills Test at WEST?
Iowa Basic Skills Testing at WEST is a convenient way for your student to fulfill the requirement of completing an annual standardized test every year.
Being in a formal testing experience gives students the preparation to perform better while in the PSEO/PLAN/ASPIRE/ACT/SAT testing setting.
Who can take the Iowa Basic Skills Test?
The Iowa Basic Skills Test is available for grades 4-12 at WEST.
Open to any and all homeschoolers can test at WEST not just WESTies
Grades 4-8 will test for THREE (3) days (Tues/Wed/Thurs). Grades 9-12 will only test TWO (2) days (Tues/Wed).
When is the Iowa Basic Skills Test offered at WEST?
Testing typically takes place the week after Grades 5-12 Classes conclude in April. Testing takes place at the WEST building - Church of the Open Door, Maple Grove - April 15-17, 2025 (Tues-Thurs)
Make-up testing date available upon request. The scheduled make-up day for 9-12 grade is the Thursday of testing week - April 17, 2025
Who is administering the Iowa Basic Skills Test?
Paula Mitlyng is the test administrator.
When can I register my student?
Registration is open mid-November until mid-February.
What is the cost of the test?
The cost of the test is $85 which covers two or three mornings of quality supervised testing covering all academic areas and serves as your annual standardized test.
- $30 non refundable if registration is cancelled
- $50 refundable up through March 1 if registration is cancelled
- No refund March 2 and beyond

What do I need to bring on testing day?
2-#2 pencils
Eraser
Calculator that you are familiar with
Water bottle
Book to read when section of test is completed early
Light, non-messy snack
When does testing begin?
9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to find a seat and get settled
Where does the testing take place?
At the WEST building in a room downstairs and the hallway to the right - read signs in WEST's entry way (by the garden shed) for exact direction to room location
Can parents stay and wait while students are testing?
Parents are to drop off student/s and return at the end of testing time as designated by the test adminstrator
When/How do I receive test results?
Typically test results are mailed to the tester's home by mid-June.
