HSC Sequence Subjects

What do we mean by sequence subjects? HSC offers a four-year cycle of Science, History, and Literature topics. All students in the program have the opportunity to study these topics, although we allow for flexibility in the specific courses and curriculum at each grade level. For example, when HSC is studying Life Science, we may see a range of courses from "My Body" at the Kindergarten level, to "A Bug's Life" at the lower elementary level, to a microscope survey course in middle school, to Honors Biology at the secondary level. When we take on medieval literature, we could see knights jousting down the elementary hallway, dioramas of the Canterbury Tales, or research papers on Dante's view of eternity. Just imagine: the whole family immersed in the same topics! What potential for field trips, dinner discussions, library binges, hands-on projects, wall displays, and "Impress the Grandparents" events!

Think of this plan as something to benefit those younger children coming up into high school – you'll be able to look ahead to HSC when mapping out their course of study.

We want to make sure co-op members are able to take the sequence classes as desired, so we may repeat them in the daily schedule or offer a one-semester class twice in a year. On the flip side, we always offer many classes that are not sequence classes, leaving ample room for the wonderful creativity of our teachers, and allowing us to serve people whose needs don't fit for now into our cycle of topics.

In order to offer the sequence subjects, we may hire non-member teachers to teach them at any age level, but especially at the high school level.
